Adjusted Expectations, Vol. 1 is Jason’s sixth disc.

AEV1 is a Los Angeles sequence.  It includes the recent favorite, “Good Day in L.A.” on the most literal end.  But tracks like “Dust” and “Highway One” recall classic Los Angeles literature.  The disc is filled with references to car culture, various LA neighborhoods, and the need to get out of LA that we all feel here at times.

The sound is fairly sparse—mostly voice and acoustic guitar—with occasional multi-tracked harmonies, guitar orchestration and beat boxes.

[The title comes in part from a fortune cookie fortune imploring one to "KEEP YOUR EXPECTATIONS REASONABLE." See the cover here.]

What can I say? I'm happier with this album than anything I've ever done. I had great friends over, Est Nyboer, to play drums, and Joselyn Wilkinson to sing a little with me. Then the rest I just did at my leisure. Well... that makes it sound easier than it was. The world was driving me insane. But doing this music, alone and with friends, I really felt the love that gives me faith in peace.

Oh yeah, and it's the grooviest and lovingly loudest disc yet.

Living Room came after a couple amazing trips across the country playing gigs, house concerts, and hooking up with all sorts of musicians that I might not have met "stoking the star maker machinery" in LA. I recorded it mostly in my living room back home, but also in Jackson, Mississippi, a campground in Ohio, and in George Herbert Moore's trailer in Burgaw, North Carolina. The Septuagenarian blues man taught me so much, that I had to put a little of our jams on here to spice things up. He's truly a joy and I think this album captured a bit of that spirit over a myriad of topics. The most intimate disc I've ever done.

I like this album. I'd been hanging out with a great group of musicians from UCLA at the time. Most of the guys were studying jazz and ethnomusicology. We got a really nice organic sound. Some of the songs feel a little young to me now, but tracks like Anali, Ballet Girl, and Celia represent a nice folk style that I don't do as much anymore. Then there's the beautiful words of Peter J Harris that I set to music on the bonus track, Winter in Brazil.

First put together for some friends on a trip to NYC, then I decided to print up fifty cassette to help finance a trip to an exhibit at the National Gallery. I flew there but toured up the coast on a Peter Pan Bus. It all worked out, but I never made another cassette release. Obiviously the songs were the genesis of the Distil disc and other versions of these songs appeared on the next two albums.
