Bio:

Reflecting his Mississippi- and Maine-bred parents’ interracial marriage in the anti-miscegenation 1960’s, Jason Luckett’s work is as varied and socially conscious as his background. The Hawaii-born, Southern California-bred artist has performed with classical Indian musicians in Kerala, toured the western United States to promote healthcare reform, been published in the groundbreaking literary anthology The Black Body, and performed in venues as varied as the prestigious ALOUD series at the Los Angeles Public Library, UCLA’s Royce Hall, and the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival.

The singer, songwriter, guitarist and essayist has released six full-length albums on his Lucky Masala Head label, toured the United States and Europe numerous times, including stops at Austin’s South by Southwest and England’s Glastonbury Festival, and has shared the stage with such artists as Tracy Chapman, the Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell and members of Bauhaus and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His summer 2011 tour included headlining at Germany’s Mannifest and the Copenhagen Songwriters Festival.

His latest release, The Second Half of the Bet (Hope Again), moves organically through folk, jazz, rock and world rhythm influences, retaining the strong personality of what Jason irreverently calls “groovy acoustic soul.”

“He uses his guitar as an accompaniment to his stellar, expressive voice as well as his intriguing love songs and mesmerizing essays. . . . He’s a little Sam Cooke, a little Lenny Kravitz, and a little Neil Young.” (Music Connection)

“Luckett is a charismatic, romantic poet who wields lyrical dexterity in his heartbreaking yet inspirational narratives.” (HITS Magazine)
