Sat, 07/23: Banneker-Douglas Museum

I’m really looking forward to this evening at the Banneker-Douglass Museum. I’m doing two sets in this museum dedicated to preserving Maryland’s African American heritage, which serves as the state’s official repository of African American material culture. It’s my first time in Annapolis.

Sat, 06/11: Mixed Roots Festival @ Japanese American National Museum

I’m excited to be back this year in a program with a wonderful group of artists performing Saturday night @ 6:30pm. Go to mxroots.org/special-events for the full line up. I’ll be singing and performing an excerpt of the piece I wrote for the Emmett Till Project last August called “Three Playing Fields” about my parents and my relationship to the racial violence that rocked us in our youths in quite different ways. It’s not an easy piece for me. And if you’re thinking of bringing children, there are expletives and discussion of sexuality that may provoke conversations that you may find difficult with pre-teens. But I promise you it will be a powerful evening.
